Study: Women Spending Less Than Men

  • August 4, 2009
Women are reining in their spending more tightly than men in the current downturn, according to a survey from TD Ameritrade: 86% of women say they are spending less, compared to 78% of men.

Some 58% say they are dining out less often (versus 48% of men), 54% are buying fewer clothes and shoes (compared to 40% of men), and 36% are cutting back on charitable giving. (Only 26% of men say they are cutting back on such gifts.)

The survey also turned up key regional differences, with 52% of those from the Northeast postponing a major purchase compared to 39% in the West. And 19% percent of those surveyed from the Northeast report that they have postponed adding to the family, either through pregnancy or adoption, compared to just 7% from the West.--Sarah Mahoney
