GE Augments Reality In China

  • January 5, 2010
GE has launched an augmented reality campaign in China to promote GE's wind energy technology to consumers at http://www.imaginationatwork.cn. The mixed reality merges a physical real-world scene with virtual, computer-generated imagery with 3D graphics that feature three near-shore wind turbines on the backdrop of the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Shanghai's skyline complemented by a misty seaside. GE says the AR campaign is unique, because it requires user interaction: When users print off the graphic from GE China's AR Web site on standard printer paper and face it against a regular webcam, the 3D image will change as the user moves the paper. As an added effect, blowing on the computer's microphone will cause the 3D wind turbines to rotate as if the user is propelling them with wind.
