Wal-Mart Stores, which last week eliminated 11,500 jobs at its Sam's Club division, says it will also axe 300 corporate support positions.
"With this last major strategic piece in place, we
are beginning our new fiscal year with every part of our business focused on being even more responsive to our customers," says Mike Duke, president/CEO of the Bentonville, Ark.-based chain, in a memo
to employees, posted on the company's Web site.
"This was a difficult decision, but I believe that if we ask our operations to be leaner and more customer-focused, we must ask the same of our
support teams at the home office."--Sarah Mahoney
