Armstrong To Chair Ad Council

Tim Armstrong

AOL CEO Tim Armstrong has taken the chairman's role at the nonprofit Ad Council after having been vice chairman.

He replaces Johnson & Johnson's Brian Perkins for the one-year term. Armstrong has been part of the unpaid board since 2008.

Peggy Conlon, Ad Council president-CEO, stated that Armstrong has "considerable experience in online and social media, [which] will help us expand the reach and impact of our campaigns." Armstrong had a long career at Google before taking over at AOL last year.

The Ad Council, which reported $36.1 million in revenues and $35.6 million in expenses on its last government filing, said it attempts to rotate board chairs between media companies, ad agencies and advertisers -- part of its financial base.

The new vice chairman in 2011 is BBDO CEO Andrew Robertson; in 2012, it will be Marc Pritchard, P&G global marketing officer.

The Ad Council, which has used McCann-Erickson to craft its public-service ads pro bono, has also tapped 14 new board members, including Nick Brien, CEO, McCann Worldgroup and Tony Vinciquerra, president-CEO, Fox Networks.
