In 1977, "Star Wars" introduced the word "droid" into the vernacular. Now, Motorola and Verizon are paying tribute.
Beginning Sept. 30, Verizon will begin offering a limited-edition, Motorola Droid R2-D2 phone, designed to look like the squat, but heroic Astromech Droid from the "Star Wars" movies. The phone will be packaged in a custom box resembling carbonite (the substance Han Solo was encased in from "The Empire Strikes Back") and comes with a Star Wars media dock and wired stereo headsets.
In addition, the phone will come with special preloaded content, including R2-D2 notification sounds and ringtones, an R2-D2 clock widget, a "Best of R2-D2" video with original Cantina music, and a binoculars app.
