Toyota Expands Smart

Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America, Inc. said it has broadened the scope of its on-site SMART evaluation process. The Swift Market Analysis Response Teams, launched in April, comprises engineers and field technicians, whose job it is to contact customers within 24 hours of a report and, and perform on-site vehicle evaluations.

According to the automaker, the SMART program has evaluated 4,200 vehicles, "Giving Toyota a better understanding of what customers are actually experiencing." The company says it has has not found "A single case in which the vehicle's electronic throttle control system would lead to unintended acceleration."

The company is also putting Smart Stop Technology -- a brake override system -- into 84% of the Toyota, Lexus and Scion models on sale in the U.S. and an equivalent technology has been included in all of Toyota and Lexus hybrids since inception.
