OLED, which stands for organic light emitting diodes, uses less
energy than incandescent bulbs, is nearly as efficient as fluorescent and produces a color that is closer to natural light than either of the two dominant bulb technologies. The OLED screens are also
far more expensive to produce right now, but the cost is expected to drop drastically.
The ramp-up "is starting to happen and will be a significant market," says Janice Mahon, a manager at Universal Display Corp., a N.J.-based developer of OLED technology.
