Vegan Diets More Mainstream

In a 2009 survey, advocates at the not-for-profit Vegetarian Resource Group reported about 1% of Americans are vegan. That amounts to one-third of people who report being vegetarians. Vegans, for the uninitiated, are vegetarians who eschew any kind of animal product, be it butter, cheese, milk or ham hocks. The same group found a similar breakdown for Americans aged 8 to 18.

Kraft Foods reports that it shipped out more Boca Original Vegan Burger Patties and Boca Ground Crumbles last year; the increase was 1%.
