Music Videos Popular On Laptops

Music videos may not be popular on MTV anymore, but on other screens they still have plenty of value.

In a recent survey, Nielsen says the most popular form of accessing music is on laptop and desktop computer screens via music videos. Almost 60% of those surveyed prefer video music performances on computers.

Well down the list, at 26%, is streaming music with no video on computers. A slightly smaller number -- 21% -- prefer to access music with no video via mobile phones. Nearly the same number -- 23% -- like music videos on their mobile devices, while 20% favor downloading or using music apps.

The fastest-growing segment is those accessing music on mobile devices, with its key young consumers 20 to 24 years of age. The Nielsen survey says one in four of these young customers intends to pay to download music videos on their mobile phones.

Television does play its part in marketing music on mobile and other devices. For example, Nielsen says Super Bowl halftime music performers witnessed a 555% post-game sales jump from electronic downloads.

Consumers in Asia-Pacific countries have the highest activity for music downloads on mobile devices.

The Nielsen analysis came from 26,644 online consumers in 53 countries.
