News Corp.'s Murdoch: Tablets Are The New Paper Stock

Speaking during the "Cannes Debate" session at this morning's Lions festival, News Copr.'s James Murdoch said that the company does not view tablet computers as "the Web in your hand." Instead, he said News Corp.'s view is that it is "an incredibly new new stock" for newspaper publishers.

Noting that it both cheaper for publishers and a better experience for readers, Murdoch asserted that tablet computers are leading to a "revolution in storytelling in people's hands."

Asked by moderator, WPP chief Martin Sorrell, how that revolution is going for News Corp.'s newspapers, Murdoch said that nearly half of The Times Of London's subscribers are digital, while The Wall Street Journal currently has more than 1 million digital subscribers.

So are we believing in what Mr. Murdoch says about the value and efficacy of tablets as a replacement for print; he the guy who spend over $800 million of his shareholders money on -- now worthless -- My Space? Does Mr. Murcoch believe that the "not web in your hand" tablets won't have the same short attention spans that desktop and laptop computers have? After all, the entire internet is one-click away just like the browser based systems.
