June saw higher demand for pickups, and small cars maintained strong sales. But Toyota and Honda saw sales suffer from parts shortages. General Motors' Chevrolet Cruze therefore beat Civic and Toyota
Camry to become the best-selling passenger car in the U.S.
Overall, U.S. sales for June climbed by 7% year-over-year, to 1.05 million, short of the double-digit gain industry analysts
had been forecasting but still an improvement over May, when the industry posted its first slide this year. Chrysler's Ram gained 35% for the month, and Chevrolet's Silverado was up by 5%. Ford's two
all-new small cars, the Focus and Fiesta, combined for 26,920 sales in June, up 66% versus a year ago. Ford's overall June sales totaled 194,114, up 14% versus a year ago. General Motors dealers in
the United States reported 215,358 total sales in June, an 11% gain compared to June 2010.
Kia posted a 41% increase, while Hyundai reported record sales for June, as its sales jumped
16%.
