Live TV from the E.W. Scripps Company is
coming soon to a mobile device near you. The media giant said Thursday it is rolling out streaming
video in all nine of its television markets that will allow its stations to deliver live video programming to almost any mobile device.
When a user opens the mobile app of for a given Scripps
station—and in the event of major breaking news or severe weather—the app’s on-screen display will prompt users to view live content. Clicking on the prompt will open a live media
player that could be a simulcast of the station’s on-air programming or coverage unique to that stream. Users will also be notified of a live streaming event using push notifications as well as
SMS and email alerts.
The new capability will launch in September ( users can check the local apps for each market’s debut) and will be available on iOS, Android and BlackBerry phones
and tablet, and through a mobile Web browser.
Eventually, Scripps plans to build out live programming specifically for the mobile audience. “This isn’t a novelty for Scripps,
it’s the core of what we do – we’re just devising new ways to do it,” said Adam Symson, vice president of interactive for the Scripps television division, in a statement.
