Most of Macy's 810 stores will open at midnight on Thanksgiving, four hours earlier than in recent years. The only exceptions will be the 20 or so stores where state or local laws prevent the
move.
"We've been looking at our hours and demand as the holiday approaches, and we think the customer will respond," Macy's spokesman Jim Sluzewski said. Macy's more-upscale sister chain,
Bloomingdale's, won't have midnight openings, Sluzewski said.
Last week, Target Corp. said it will break
with its usual around-dawn opening practices and begin business at midnight on Thanksgiving night. Best Buy Inc.
opened at 5 a.m. last year and said it isn't yet releasing the timing for this year's opening. Last year, Toys R Us opened at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving, and stayed open through 10 p.m. Friday. "We
haven't announced our Black Friday hours as yet," spokeswoman Jennifer Albano said.
