Vine has hit 40 million users worldwide, according to a Twitter tweet today. That figure is more than three time the 13 million users Vine was widely reported as having in June when
Instagram launched its video capability. Instagram still boasts more than three times as many users (130 million), but Vine appears to be gaining ground on its rival.
Since Twitter acquired the video app last year and relaunched it in January, its six-second videos have become a quirky cultural phenomenon, fueled by young enthusiasts
and attracting big brands from GE to Lowe’s to Urban Outfitters. With its user base reaching 40 million, Vine should maintain its appeal to advertisers even with the arrival of Instagram
video.
