Mag Bag: Politico Prepares To Launch Print Magazine

Magazines started becoming Web sites a while ago, but the reverse dynamic -- Web sites becoming magazines -- is a bit more recent. The newest addition in this emerging category is Politico Magazine, a print and online publication from the eponymous (and ubiquitous, at least during election years) political news site.

Politico is promoting the launch with an event in (where else) Washington, D.C. It will include appearances by a number of notable political figures, which will be live-streamed on the Politico Web site. Content from the new magazine will also be featured daily on a new online section of the site, set to launch Thursday, November 14.

Bank of America is the presenting launch sponsor for the print edition and the exclusive online advertising sponsor for 2013.

Earlier this year, Politico launched Politico Pro, a subscription print magazine complementing the Web site of the same name, which targets Washington decision-makers with journalism about policy areas.

While Web site-to-magazine launches are a rare breed, they are not entirely unheard of: WebMD The Magazine launched back in 2005, and earlier this year Meredith revealed plans to launch Allrecipes magazine in November of this year.

MSLO Names Dienst CEO

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has named Daniel Dienst to the position of chief executive officer, the company announced earlier this week. Dienst previously served as CEO of Sims Metal Management, which specializes in scrap metal recycling, and has a record of leading successful turnarounds through strict financial discipline. Dienst has his work cut out from him, as he joins MSLO amid an ongoing court battle with Macy's over MSLO's licensing and merchandise deal with JCPenney. JCPenney recently announced that it plans to terminate its deal with MSLO earlier than expected.
