Over the past several years, BuzzFeed has
established itself as one of the leaders in native advertising, pulling in over $100 million in revenue on the back of a native ad strategy. The man that helped boost BuzzFeed to that current
position, former CRO Andy Wiedlin, left BuzzFeed late last year -- but he’s still sticking around the native ad space.
Nativo, a programmatic native ad platform, on Monday announced that Wiedlin has joined its advisory board. Also joining Nativo’s board is Russ Fradin, CEO of Dynamic Signal and board member of TubeMogul and comScore.
"I'm a big believer in the power of native advertising, and the next big opportunity is providing native at scale,” stated Wiedlin.
The programmatic native ad industry took a big step forward earlier this year when the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) released its OpenRTB 2.3 native ad specifications in a bid to standardize the way native ads are traded programmatically.
Nativo has been on a bit of a hot streak when it comes to adding big names to its boards. In addition to Wiedlin and Fradin joining as advisors, Nativo added Serge Matta, CEO of comScore, to its board of directors earlier this year.
As the line between editorial and advertising gets murkier, you're going to see more of this. It's my opinion that native ads work best on mobile and inside of apps and elsewhere within the mobile ecosystem that can drive downloads, subscriptions, etc. I think this is why companies like Airpush, Facebook and others will dominate the native mobile ad world because they're the first and the best when it comes to really getting all the native mobile advertising can and should be.
