The leading cause of data breaches among healthcare providers stems from criminal behavior and malicious attacks, according to the Ponemon Institute's fifth annual report
on privacy and security issues facing healthcare organizations. According to the report, more than
40 percent of respondents had experienced more than five data breaches over the past
two years. In addition, 39 percent said a criminal attacker caused the breach and 10 percent attributed the breach to a malicious insider.
