Google Becomes Registrant For Alphabet Domain Name

From A to Z, Google now owns the entire alphabet domain name, but why didn't the name go to the registrant Alphabet? The whois record shows that the domain name abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com was created in 1999, and owned by an unknown private entity until recently sold to Google.
