Shiva Ayyadurai, a self-described “world-renowned scientist, inventor, lecturer, philanthropist and entrepreneur” will receive $750,000 as part of a settlement with Gawker Media for his
claims that the now defunct news site defamed him. Ayyadurai claims to have invented email as we know it today, despite the fact that may tech historians attribute the invention of email to late
computer programmer Ray Tomlinson. Ayyadurai won the defamation suit on the grounds that Gawker "falsely trace the origin of email and call Dr. Ayyadurai a liar." Many computer programming
veterans have criticized Ayyadurai for the lawsuit.
