Tycoon Uses Full-Page Ads To Break Up

“Say it with diamonds” is wise romantic advice when things are going well, but when it’s time to end a relationship, “say it with newsprint” is the way to go.

Why not splurge for a full-page newspaper ad telling your ex that it’s over and they should take a hike because he or she isn’t getting your damn money? Yeah, they’ll probably get the message.

That’s what Hong Kong retail tycoon Joseph Lau, the world’s 65th-richest man, did earlier this week. He let the world know he has nothing to do with his ex, Yvonne Lui, who by the way, has plenty of his money already.

Lau, who has a net worth of $12.6 billion, took out full-page ad in a number of Hong Kong newspapers to rebut what he claims are untrue rumors in the local press about Lui’s possible claims on his fortune. In the ad, Lau stated that before they broke up, he “gave her lots of money, jewellery and other gifts, the total value of which exceeded HK$2 billion,” or around $260 million U.S.

The ad went on: “Ms. Lui has accumulated considerable wealth, and she is now a very wealthy woman. She can maintain a luxurious lifestyle by herself without any financial support.”

Lau reiterated this his relationship with Lui is over, emphasizing that his contact and correspondence with her is limited to the care of their two infant children.

Lau previously earned notoriety with his purchase of the “Blue Moon” diamond, which he named the “Blue Moon of Josephine” in honor of his 7-year-old daughter with Lui, for around $40 million in November 2015.
