Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, thought that Gmail was an April Fool's Day joke when he was hired. He was hired on April 1, 2004, the same day that the popular email product launched.
"I interviewed with Google on April 1, 2004, which is April Fool's Day, and Google had just announced Gmail, and it was invite only, but people still weren't sure if it was an April
Fools’ joke," Pichai said while speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur. "And I remember doing my interviews through the day, and people kept asking me, 'What do you think of
Gmail?', but I hadn't had a chance to use it. I thought it was an April Fools’ joke."
