Can Too Much Email Increase Your Carbon Footprint?

A year of incoming email adds about 300 pounds of emissions to a person's carbon footprint, the same as about 200 miles of driving 200 in an average car, according to research. The average email costs about 0.3 grams of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2e), according to carbon footprint expert Mike Berners-Lee's 2010 book How Bad are Bananas: The Carbon Footprint of Everything. The French government has included cutting down on email as part of its list of suggestions for how to help cut down on personal emissions.
