D&AD Awards Five Black Pencils

Clemenger BBDO Melbourne is the most awarded advertising agency of 2017 at the D&AD Awards, winning 13 Pencils overall - including one Black Pencil, five Yellow Pencils, two Graphite Pencils and one Wood Pencil for the 'Meet Graham' campaign that promotes better road safety by imagining how the human body would need to evolve to better survive on the roads.

Earlier, D&AD announced that McCann received the highest number of individual Pencils. Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, by comparison, won a greater proportion of higher level Black and Yellow Pencils.

Studio Sutherl& is this year's most awarded design agency, winning eight Pencils overall, including two Yellow. Michael Johnson, creative director at Johnson Banks, Ex-President of D&AD and Black Pencil winner, received this year's President's Award.

Five Black Pencils, the highest accolade in the creative industry, were awarded at this year's ceremony. "We’re the Superhumans" by Blink for Channel 4/Paralympics claimed two Black Pencils. Other top honors went to INGO Stockholm for their Swedish Number campaign for The Swedish Tourist Association - which gave people the chance to talk to a Swedish person on the phone about the country - and to Serviceplan for their work with Dot Incorporation creating the world’s first Braille smartwatch.

"What unites them is a clear desire to create a better world, whether it’s promoting diversity, safety or inclusivity but what is really fantastic is that they win this coveted award for their craft," says Tim Lindsay, CEO, D&AD. "Proof that creativity as a force for good lives outside of a single category but has become an all-encompassing theme."

There were 62 Yellow, 180 Graphite, and 485 Wood Pencils given out totaling 732 awards. One piece of work had to be removed from the final tally after the initial judging process had closed.
