'Elite Daily' Axes 47 Staffers After Bustle Acquisition

Elite Daily has reportedly let go of half its staff, following its sale by The Daily Mail to Bustle Digital Group, according to company filings obtained by the New York Post.

Some 47 of Elite Daily’s 94 staffers have been cut, according to the report. Elite Daily editor-in-chief Kaitlyn Cawley is still onboard, and will report to Bustle editor Kate Ward.

Bustle Digital Group did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Media company sales and changes of ownership usually result in staff cuts, but losing half its team is a blow to Elite Daily.

Bustle announced it was acquiring Elite Daily from Daily Mail last week, a move that surprised many in the industry, considering Elite Daily has been in trouble for some time.

When Daily Mail purchased Elite Daily in 2015, the site had about 40 million monthly unique visitors. Since then, its on-site readership has been cut in half.

Bustle’s CEO Bryan Goldberg believes the property is still valuable, despite its decline. “We see a tremendous opportunity to build off of Elite Daily’s strong capabilities in video, social and native advertising,” he stated at the time.

Elite Daily produces original videos that generate about 60 million monthly views, Goldberg told Business Insider. Both sites are focused on millennial women.

Bustle Digital Group and its three properties — Bustle, Elite Daily and young-mom site Romper — have a combined readership of up to 80 million unique monthly visitors, he added.
