Gursoy Exits 'Village Voice,' Names Former 'NYT' Exec Gillis CRO

The Village Voice has hired former New York Times ad and sales exec Kerrie Gillis to serve as Chief Revenue Officer, replacing Suzan Gursoy after just one year serving as publisher and COO of the New York weekly.

A spokesperson would only say Gursoy left The Village Voice “pursuant to an agreement.”

Gillis will report to Peter Barbey, CEO of The Village Voice, who stated she will “play a pivotal role” as the paper “continues to expand editorial, launch new digital properties and reach wider audiences.”

Gillis most recently served as VP of advertising and sales operations at The New York Times.

Barbey bought The Village Voice less than two years ago. He has overseen shakeups, as well as a gradual overhaul of the struggling free paper, founded in 1955 by Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher and Norman Mailer.

The Village Voice hired Stephen Mooallem, former executive editor of Harper's Bazaar, as its editor in chief in December, its third editor since Barbey bought the paper in 2015.

Barbey increased the paper’s circulation and created a quarterly-style supplement called Seen to attract high-end advertisers.

In February, the weekly announced its second-annual Fashion Issue. It also launched its first dedicated Film Issue last September.

The Village Voice recently became the official media sponsor of New York Pride Week and announced live awards, such as the 2017 Obie Awards for Off-Broadway and its 10th-annual Choice Eats restaurant event.

The newsweekly will continue to roll out upgrades and redesigns as it prepares for an "extensive" relaunch this year. It promises “many more activations are in the wings as the publication works to regain its standing as the cultural mouthpiece of the city.”

Will that be the end of the Publisher title at the paper, like Time magazine did?
