8.4M Netflix Viewers Binge Full Season Of TV Series

Long resistant to publicly revealing any viewership data for shows on its video platform, Netflix has released some information on binge viewing.

Netflix says 8.4 million of its global viewers binge an entire season of TV series within 24 hours of its release. Netflix has a total of 109.3 million worldwide subscribers -- 56.5 million international and 52.8 million U.S. subscribers.

In addition, Netflix says this activity is growing rapidly -- from 200,000 members in 2013 to more than 5 million in September 2017 on average. Netflix called these viewers “binge racers.”

The most-binged original Netflix TV series in a 24-hour period has been “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.”

In the past, Nielsen has released select viewership data for some specific Netflix shows such as “Orange is the New Black.” But it has yet to offer viewing of Netflix shows on a regular basis. In July, Nielsen said it would be measuring TV viewership for two new digital-only TV platforms: Hulu and YouTube.

TV executives have said Netflix does release some viewership data of acquired shows to TV-movie studios. Those are companies that have their programs licensed from Netflix.

After “Gilmore Girls,” Netflix's next most-binged original series in a 24-hour period include: “Fuller House,” “Marvel's The Defenders,” “The Seven Deadly Sins,” “The Ranch,” “Santa Clarita Die,t”  “Trailer Park Boys,” “F is for Family,” “Orange Is the New Black” and “Stranger Things”, completing the top 10.

The next 10 include: “Friends from College,” “Atypical,” “Grace and Frankie,” “Wet Hot American Summer,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “House of Cards,” “Love,” “GLOW," “Chewing Gum” and “Master of None.”

The top five binging countries are Canada, the United States, Denmark, Finland and Norway.

Binge racers are a relatively tiny subset of the 5 million who binge the whole series. Binge viewers watch the whole series over a week or maybe a weekend. Binge racers watch all 10 hours in a single day.

I think I misread the story. 8.4 million have binge raced at least once, which is why "how often" they binge race is still unknown. Maybe the new Nielsen measures will shed light.
