Consumer PC Notebooks Habla Español

According to IDC's final PC market data, the Spanish PC market saw strong double-digit growth of 24.7% in the first quarter of 2005, building upon an already robust final quarter last year. In particular, the desktop market showed exceptional strength, growing at almost the same level as notebooks as it caught up from a relatively weak performance in 2004

Olther 1st quarter report highlights include:

  • Desktop sales grew by 24.5%, up from -3.9% in 1Q04
  • Desktop shipments were boosted by consumer sales up 30.9%
  • Commercial desktop sales grew by 19.9% overall

Elsa Opitz, research manager, IDC EMEA Quarterly PC Research, said "... (there was) greater consolidation towards the top-tier vendors, particularly for desktops where most local assemblers lost share against major established brands."

The Spanish PC market showed outstanding growth in portable PCs, particularly in the home segment as consumers once again responded well to attractive pricing from the major vendors, helping drive 44.9% growth in consumer notebook shipments.

Commercial shipments continued to represent the bulk of notebook volume, growing at 11.9% year on year.

  • New purchases as well as renewals led to sustained growth in the SMB market
  • Thanks to an improving price/performance ratio, portable form factors are becoming increasingly popular as alternatives to desktops, though the latter remains the dominant form factor in the corporate sector

Major suppliers include:

  • HP holds the number one position in the Spanish PC market, increasing its market share to 22.2% overall. HP's growth was mostly in desktop sales, growing 175% in the consumer market.
  • Acer retained second place in the overall ranking as well as the top spot in the notebook market.
  • Execution and marketing activity helped Dell rebound in desktop sales and notebooks, enabling them to hold third place, except holding second in the x86 server market, increasing its share to 22.1%.
  • Fujitsu Siemens came from seventh to fourth place in the overall ranking. Marketing focus in notebooks helped to generate close to 140% growth in this segment.
  • Local vendor Airis Computers was healthier in notebooks although below market growth.
