Theater-Centric OTT Network 'Stage' To Launch This Year

Niche over-the-top streaming video networks continue to proliferate, trying to focus on genres or markets underserved by existing players.

The latest entrant into the crowded field? Stage, which has been in development for two years and bills itself as “the first streaming network devoted to the world of theatre.”

Content on the network will include scripted series, reality and variety programming, as well as documentaries, live theater, Broadway shows and concerts.

Among the shows in development are “Studio Sessions,” which features live acoustic performances celebrating a composer’s work, “CrossOvers,” a talk show featuring Broadway stars who have crossed over into other media and “The Next Great American Musical” -- a competition show that will see one show turned into a Broadway musical.

Stage will launch for free in August, with a full premiere of its subscription product later this year. The network says it will have around 500 hours of content for its full launch, and will maintain a free version of the product with limited programming even after the subscription version debuts. The company hopes to launch internationally in 2019.
