Changing Of The Guard Coming To McKinney

Durham, NC-based McKinney is making a CEO switch effective in October. Joe Maglio, who has served as CEO of the agency’s New York office for the past year is being promoted to agency-wide CEO, succeeding Brad Brinegar, who has served as chairman and CEO since 2002.

Brinegar will remain chairman at the agency until at least 2020. Commenting on the succession, Brinegar said, “I look forward to supporting Joe’s leadership growing McKinney’s reputation as a modern creative agency.”

McKinney was acquired by Cheil Worldwide, the South Korean agency group, in 2012.

Prior to joining McKinney New York (the office was established in 2013) last year Maglio was managing director at Havas New York, which he joined in 2012. He was promoted to managing director in 2016.

Earlier Maglio was group account director at Publicis and before that marketing director at Ogilvy.  He has managed a range of large clients including TD Ameritrade, Citigroup and Reckitt Benckiser.

It was last year that Brinegar began the process of succession planning. After working with his New York CEO for a while he decided Maglio was the right executive for the job making him the fifth CEO of McKinney, which will turn 50 next year.

As a result of the announced succession plan, John Newall, who has been president of the agency since 2012, has left McKinney to pursue other opportunities.

Maglio will remain in the New York area but will continue to travel between the Durham and New York offices frequently. Business is led from both offices and client teams are representative of both offices.

Meanwhile McKinney has managed its way to impressive growth recently as the broader industry has endured a rough patch. Agency revenues are up 50% from the end of 2016 and continue to grow with the addition of recent new clients Clear Choice Dental, S&P Global, and an expanded role with ESPN and the addition of Blacture.
