
Starbucks will stop selling newspapers at its coffee shops nationwide beginning Sept. 1.
The company sells The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today
at its more than 8,600 cafes.
Starbucks started selling The New York Times in 2000 and added The Wall Street Journal and USA Today in 2010.
Shelving fixtures that display whole-bean coffee and grab-and-go snacks will also be removed from stores, “as part of our continuous efforts to enhance the overall experience in our
stores for both partners and customers,” a Starbucks spokeswoman told the New York Post, which first reported the news.
The decision is “based on changing
customer behavior,” she added.
The Pew Research Center's latest report on the
state of media found print newspaper weekday circulation fell 12% in 2018 from the
previous year.

Both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal reported their respective digital readership grew by more than 20% in 2018, according to the New York
Post.
There is a second issue for Starbucks: Customers read the newspapers, but don't pay for them.
