'Monocle' Opens First Retail Airport Store

Global affairs and lifestyle magazine brand Monocle has opened its first travel retail store, in the Hong Kong International Airport.

The 190-square meter shop is the first in a rollout of airport-based outposts for Monocle. The stores will sell books, magazines, newspapers, travel accessories and other Monocle products also available on its online shop.

“Airport news and shop formats have not been keeping pace with the retail industry in general, and this debut seeks to raise the game for both the print industry and customers,” stated Tyler Brûlé, editor-in-chief-founder-chairman of Monocle.

The shop also sells Monocle Travel Guides (which cover 37 different cities), stationery, the Porter x Monocle luggage and bag line, international drinks and snacks, and special-edition products available only at the Hong Kong airport store.

The store was developed in collaboration with Paris-based Lagardère Travel Retail, which operates over 4,600 stores in places like airports and train stations.

Hong Kong International Airport has 74 million visitors each year and operates over 800 flights every day.

The 12-year-old Monocle brand operates stores and cafes in London, Zurich, Merano, Los Angeles, Toronto, Tokyo and Hong Kong — most of which have opened in the last few years. It will soon open an outpost in Milan.
