'NYT,' Verizon Provide Free Digital Access To Title I Schools

The New York Times Company is partnering with Verizon to provide students and teachers in Title I schools with free access to The Times’ website.

The partnership will give access to over 7 million Title I high-school students and teachers nationwide in middle schools within the Verizon Innovative Learning program.

Schools will also get access to curated educational content from The Times’Learning Network, an educational resource with articles, photos, videos, illustrations, graphs and podcasts from The Times.

The Verizon Innovative Learning program works to empower under-resourced Title I middle schools with free technology, internet access and a STEM-focused curriculum.

High-school faculty and students will receive full digital access to The Times when connected to their school’s network. Middle-school teachers will be able to access Learning Network content through the Verizon Innovative Learning Connections portal.

At least 40% of the student population at Title I schools belong to low-income households, the two companies noted.

This partnership is one of a number of initiatives from The Times to reach students.

In April, it announced a collaboration with Everlane to promote climate journalism — each sale of a coproduced clothing line provides access to the NYTimes.com for nine public school students, through the publisher’s Sponsor a Subscription program.

Earlier this year, The Times announced it had delivered free access to more than 3 million U.S. students, with donations from over 30,000 readers.

The program launched in 2017, with donations coming from almost 75 countries. Most donations average $50.
