'Atlantic' Adds To Politics, Ideas Teams

The Atlantic has made two new editorial hires.

Nick Baumann, who had been the senior enterprise editor at HuffPost, will become politics editor. Whitney Dangerfield, a former staff editor for The New York Times, will join the "Ideas" section as senior editor.

Both take their roles in January.

Baumann has also worked at “Mother Jones,” while Dangerfield was most recently the digital editor at NPR’s weekly show “This American Life” hosted by Ira Glass.

Baumann will head the politics section; Yoni Appelbaum and Juliet Lapido lead “Ideas.”

Jeffrey Goldberg is EIC of The Atlantic.

Separately, The Atlantic launched a redesign of its site and app beginning with the December 2019 issue, themed “How to Stop a Civil War.” It presents a clean look that puts the text front and center. Also this month, The Atlantic sold its City Lab, a site covering urban innovation, to Bloomberg.

That move came two months after The Atlantic launched a digital subscription service.
