Buzzfeed’s Katie Notopoulos is not a fan of Facebook’s lax regulation
of branded content paid for by political campaigns. As she writes: “Allowing political candidates to use influencer marketing on Instagram requires a lot of trust in the way that influencer
marketing works … and that system has always been completely broken.” In large part, that is because influencer marketing relies on “confusing the average user.”
