Complex Networks has appointed Donnie Kwak to the role of GM of Complex, the pop culture-streetwear brand, as well as promoted two editors to the GM position, with broader responsibilities at its brands.

“The old approach of building firewalls between creative and business is an outmoded approach that, for a lot of media, created inefficiencies, slowed down growth and is out of touch with the realities of operating a profitable media business in 2020,” stated Justin Killion, GM of Complex Network-executive vice president of operations and content. 

The GM role is "the perfect mix of left and right brain," he added.

Kwak will report to Killion.

Kwak was previously East Coast bureau chief at The Ringer and hosted the “Ringer FC” podcast. He also served two stints at Complex, from 2013-2015 and from 2004-2011, according to his LinkedIn profile. Previously, he worked at ESPN, Vibe and 88 Rising.

Kwak is now responsible for originating new video, audio and editorial IP, strengthening existing IP and leading teams of producers, editors and writers. He will also manage the P&L and operational strategies for Complex, working closely with sales and branded content teams around Complex’s programming slate. 

“Kwak’s appointment reflects a larger strategic shift at Complex Networks to ensure greater content collaboration, innovation and cost-effectiveness across each of Complex Networks’ brands,” according to a release.

Jacob Moore, previously editor-in-chief of music discovery brand Pigeons and Planes, is now GM.

Brendan Dunne, former managing editor of sneaker culture-focused brand Sole Collector, is now GM as well.

Chris Schoenberger will remain GM of First We Feast, Complex Networks’ food entertainment brand, and will continue to report to Killion.

Within the last year, Complex Networks has expanded into new international markets, launched ecommerce destination Complex Shop and grew revenue, according to Killion.
