OneZero’s Will Oremus considers some “radical” ideas for making social networks more functional, and beneficial to users and society at large. One is to make social networks nonprofit entities, he writes. “Liberated from the profit motive, social media companies could stop optimizing users’ feeds for engagement, stop harvesting their data, invest more in human moderation and user support, and organize their networks around public-spirited values rather than market dominance.”
