Porsche Enlists Bill Nye For Educational Videos

Porsche is featuring Bill Nye “The Science Guy” for a web series explaining the engineering of the all-electric Porsche Taycan.

The five videos, which launch today, were created by Cramer-Krasselt and are posted on the automaker’s YouTube channel. They will be supported with paid and organic social media.

Nye, who is a mechanical engineer, uses simple terms to break down complex topics like the Taycan’s 800-volt battery technology, aerodynamic design, regenerative breaking, repeat performance and two-speed transmission. Each video runs about 60 to 90 seconds.

Nye is a good fit for the project because of his ability to help everyone understand the science behind all manner of things, says Pedro Mota, vice president, marketing, Porsche Cars North America.

“He has a disarming ability to explain complex ideas in simple terms in an entertaining way,” Porsche's Pedro Mota tells Marketing Daily. “And, as a mechanical engineer, he was a perfect choice to communicate the innovations and technology that make Porsche Taycan unique.”

Consumer interest in battery electric vehicles continues to grow, Mota says.

“We want to make sure it’s clear why the Porsche Taycan is different,” he says. “We’re doing this through education that is still rooted in creating an experience for viewers—it’s educational and entertaining, as with last month’s ‘Going the Distance’ with Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves.”

“Going the Distance” is an 8-minute film showing Reeves and Winter enjoying a buddy trip while showcasing the performance of the brand’s first electric sports car. The video has more than 747,000 views on YouTube in just over a month.
