'The Washington Post' To Add 41 Edit Positions

The new titles will include two standards editors whose job will be to refine and maintain newsroom policies, working with the journalistic staff to promote best practices. 

And, two new roles will be established for recruiting: a senior editor and an assistant editor. These hires will help the paper systemize the way it recruits and brings on staff, while supporting its commitment to diversity. 

Among the other new positions are two deputy managing editors to work with Scott Vance and Barbara Vobejda in running the daily report. This will ensure that a senior editor is in place to direct news coverage from 7 a.m. ET, when London hands off to Washington, until late evening, when Washington hands off to Seoul. 

One deputy managing editor will oversee the General Assignment, Morning Mix and Live Desk teams and serve as the day-to-day architect of our live-updates coverage, the paper says. 



WaPo will also add eight new assignment editors – in Photo, National, Metro, Investigations, Design and Business. This is being done to back up colleagues who have been “taxed by the unrelenting news cycle,” the paper says. 

Also being created are eight new positions for assistant editors, most of whom will work closely with assignment editors in overseeing coverage.

Moreover, WaPo will expand its MPE desk by hiring five multiplatform editors, in part to expand that team’s role in publishing on our digital platforms. Also, it will create eight positions for breaking-news and weekend editors, including one supervising producer, in Video, Photo, National, Features and Business. 

The paer will also add to more project editor positions in design, and three additional visual enterprise editors to the business, politics and Health & Science and Climate & Environment teams.
