First Search, Now TiVo Embraces eCommerce, er, tCommerce

TiVo continued its transformation from a TV recording device to a major media gateway Thursday, unveiling a host of new online services that extend its reach into so-called e-commerce--or in the case of TiVo's TV/online convergence, t-commerce. Subscribers using TiVo's Series2 digital video recorder now have the ability to access local movie listings, purchase tickets, download music, podcasts, and even exchange Yahoo! Photos via their TiVo remote control.

The new features are the latest in TiVo CEO Tom Rogers' rapid re-engineering of TiVo from a simple TV set-top device to a media and communications portal, and follow the company's announcement earlier this week that it is working with major Madison Avenue agencies to develop a new "search" capability that would enable TiVo subscribers to search and request relevant advertising via specific categories.

The new online service features require subscribers to connect their TiVo units to a broadband connection, but are an integrated part of TiVo's standard service. In a related announcement, TiVo announced a deal with Fandango, the nation's largest movie ticketing service.
