Netflix Again Leads Oscar Nods, 'Power Of The Dog' Might Net Best Picture Win At Last

Netflix led all other studios/distributors in Academy Awards nominations once again: This year with 27.

Last year, Netflix netted 36 nominations, and in 2020, it received 24.

No streaming service has so far grabbed the gold ring: a best picture win.

But Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog” might finally break that barrier, given that it not only secured a best picture nomination, but 11 others to boot.

That’s more than more than any other film this year, and more than just 10 other films in the Academy Awards’ history. Three other films received 14 and seven received 13 — and eight of those went on to win best picture, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Further, streamers took five of the 10 best picture nominations, including Netflix’s “Don’t Look Up”; “CODA,” Apple TV+’s first Best Picture nod; and HBO Max’s “King Richard” and “Dune.”

(The non-streamer-produced best picture nominees are “Belfast,” “Drive My Car,” “Licorice Pizza,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story.”)

Among Netflix’s other nominations: “Power of the Dog”’s Jane Campion for best director, Benedict Cumberbatch (above) for best actor, and Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee for best supporting roles; “King Richard”’s Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis for best actor and best supporting actress; and three screenplay credits.
