Two Nebraska Papers Close: Staff Told To Stop Work

Platte Valley Media has closed two newspapers that serve Dawson County, Nebraska: The Tri-City Trib and The Gothenburg Times.

Staff members were told in a phone call last Friday to cease work immediately, the Gothenburg Leader reports.

The Gothenburg Times was a 114-year-old community staple.

A staff-written Facebook post said subscribers would receive refunds based on the amount of time left in their subscriptions, according to The Lexington Clipper-Herald.

The report states that The Gothenburg Times was founded in 1908, purchased by Vance and Greg Viegutz, a father-and-son team in 1977, and sold to Platte Valley Media in 2015.

The Tri City Tribune was founded by Dean Dorsey in 1965, and sold to Platte Valley Media in 2018, the Clipper-Herald continues.

The Gothernburg Leader was seen as new competition, as was the Cozad Local, revived in 2021, the Clipper-Herald adds.
