Gatorade Ad Preaches Self-Love Via Serena's Example

Anyone who saw “King Richard” knows the story of Serena Williams, although that film gave little credit to Serena and focused on her father  instead.

For those getting revved up for the U.S. Open, there’s this spot, via TBWA/Chiat/Day. The Gatorade ad, narrated by Beyonce, shows a girl watching Serena on TV. The poetic spot then talks about Serena’s rise, which is based on her self-love. The narration states that Serena has “started a movement” to “always love exactly who you are and who you can be.”

Make no mistake, though, the movement is about Serena, “a proud black woman” and a leader “who always loves being you…the whole you.”

The ad ends with the young girl watching TV and the words “Love means everything” on the screen.

It’s a fitting tribute to Serena Williams, who is currently fighting it out at the U.S. Open and is on the verge of retirement.
