In the runup to the World Cup
next month, Nike has dropped a profile of Alphonso Davies, who will be playing for Canada.
In the two-minute ad, via We Are Pi, Davies talks about becoming a refugee in Ghana. Davies’ parents, who were Liberian, fled during the Second Liberian War. In 2005, the family fled to Canada.
“Anyone can become a refugee,” Davies says. “It’s not something that you choose.”
Davies further recounts that the football pitch “was one of the first places where I felt at home.”
Davies goes on to say that he believes refugees are underestimated. The ad then shows Davies performing kicks in goal.
The ad ends with Davies missing a shot on an untended goal. “Take two,” he says, laughing.
