General Motors CMO Deborah Wahl Opts Out

General Motors Global CMO Deborah Wahl is leaving the automaker almost five years to the day that she started.

Wahl, who crafted the phrase “EVerybody In” to hype the brand’s electric vehicle offerings, is reportedly taking one of the voluntary early retirement packages the automaker began offering to white collar workers last week.

The “Voluntary Separation Program” is being offered to all U.S. salaried employees who have spent five or more years at the company.

The automaker, which issued a statement regarding Wahl's retirement as of March 31, says it will conduct a search to replace her, but sources say the new job is likely to be on a smaller scale than Wahl's current position, since global duties have shrunk in recent years.

Although GM still has a large presence in China via its Buick and Chevrolet brands, the company has remained out of Europe since 2017, when it sold Opel and Vauxhall to France's PSA Group, now part of Stellantis. The company has said it hopes to sell its EVs in Europe.

Wahl started at Cadillac five years ago before transitioning to the GM-wide position a little over three years ago. She was the company's first CMO since 2012. Immediately preceding GM, she had stints at McDonald’s Corp. and PulteGroup, a Detroit-based construction company.
