Here We Go Again: Miller Lite Ad Draws Right-Wing Criticism

Just as soon as the tempest over Bud Light’s partnership with a trans influencer appears to have run its course, a Miller Lite ad is getting the same sort of negative attention.

The Miller Lite “Bad $#!T to Good $#!T” that ran in March starring Ilana Glazer of “Broad City” is now getting singled out for its overuse of (bleeped out) curse words and its condemnation of previous beer ads that featured women in bikinis. “Miller Lite saw the Bud Light disaster and decided they needed their own woke beer ad,” read one critical tweet.

In response to the ad (and in the wake of the Bud Light controversy), The Guardian reports that “a similar harassment campaign is now being waged against Sofia Colucci, the chief marketing officer for Molson Coors. Rightwing outlets are publishing hit pieces targeting the executive and Colucci has reportedly deleted multiple social media account pages because of the harassment.”

Bud Light faced similar opposition this spring when it partnered with trans influencer and TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney. The partnership prompted the decision to put two Bud Light marketers on leave in April.

But Miller’s response has been different. While A-B remained silent for several days after the controversy and then posted a response failing to stand behind its campaign, Miller director of marketing Elizabeth Hitch told Newsweek that "We wanted to acknowledge the missteps in representation of women in beer advertising by cleaning up not just our s***, but the whole industry's s***, while benefiting the future of women and beer."
