McDonald's Celebrates '1 in 8' Americans Who've Worked For Chain

McDonald’s today launched a  “1 in 8” initiative, based on the chain’s revelation that one in eight Americans have worked for the Golden Arches.

The chain is honoring both former and current crew members who make up the diverse "1 in 8" community, according to a release. Members of the 1 in 8 will have opportunities to attend exclusive events, mentorships with notable alumni, and reunions with former team members.

A limited-edition letterman jacket, designed by McDonald's alumnus and founder of lifestyle brand Robotic Minds Concept, Kendall Hurns, helped launch the initiative. For each jacket sold, McDonald's will contribute funding to help crew members reach their aspirations through experiences and opportunities. The jackets are available beginning Oct. 16 at www.McDonalds1in8.com while supplies last.

In its latest creative campaign based on 1 in 8,  the work features a cast made up entirely of restaurant crew, for the first time ever. The effort highlights real stories and real people from local McDonald’s locations. The campaign consists of TV, social media and digital content executions.

In honor of Homecoming season, McDonald's also held the first-ever homecoming celebration for the 1 in 8 in New York City earlier this week. Current crew and 1 in 8 alumni had the chance to meet to share personal stories and career advice.

Among the 1 in 8 members in attendance were New York Times best-selling author and Peloton instructor Cody Rigsby; restaurant chef Harold Villarosa; TV host, actress and entrepreneur Alejandra Espinoza; and McDonald's franchise owner Paul Hendel. Hendel started his career as a McDonald’s crew member when he was 16 years old and now owns 31 restaurants. The event also included a competition to see who could assemble the fastest Big Mac.
