Omnicom Creates New Creative Agency Division, Taps Ruhanen To Run It

Omnicom has reorganized its advertising agencies and networks into a single unit called the Omnicom Advertising Group, which will be run by Troy Ruhanen as global CEO.

Previously Ruhanen was global CEO of TBWA, now part of the new group along with BBDO, DDB, Goodby Silverstein & Partners, GSD&M, Merkley & Partners and Zimmerman.

At TBWA, Ruhanen is succeeded by Erin Riley, who was previously US CEO at TBWA\Chiat\Day. Leadership at the other agencies effected by the reorganization remains in place.

The company said the move was similar to the way other parts of the company are organized by practice area — Omnicom Media Group, Omnicom Health Group (OHG), Omnicom Precision Marketing Group (OPMG) and Omnicom Public Relations Group (OPRG).

“One of the most exciting parts of this new division is that we can collectively invest in innovative offerings,” stated Ruhanen, “such as Omnicom’s recent first-mover partnerships in GenAI.”

He added that, “While we are excited to grow together, we will continue to celebrate and protect the uniqueness of each agency’s culture and entrepreneurship.”

For the second quarter, advertising and media — which includes the company’s creative and media agencies — posted organic revenue growth of 7.8%. On a call with analysts last month, CEO John Wren declined to break out the segment further but did say that the “majority of the growth” came from the media side while collectively the creative agencies posted some growth as well.

It was not immediately clear if the firm would start to break out creative agency growth in earnings reports or continue to bundle it with media agency performance.

In addition to Ruhanen, the Omnicom Advertising Group leadership team includes Deepthi Prakash as chief operating officer and Denis Streiff as global CFO.

Existing clients will continue to be serviced by the agency and teams they currently work with. With the reorg, those clients will now have easier access to the capabilities of the wider group. The changes will take effect on January 1, 2025.
