Gannett To Shutter A Michigan Printing Plant

Gannett is closing the facility that prints Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News this summer, resulting in the loss of 115 jobs, the Free Press reports.

The Sterling Heights Operations Facility will print its last issue of The Detroit News on August 3. Production of 32 newspapers, including the News, will be relocated to presses in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Illinois.

“Where our newspaper is printed does not impact our ability to provide continued outstanding service to the community,” the company says in a statement. “As our business becomes increasingly digital, we are making strategic decisions to ensure the future of local journalism. The Detroit Free Press will continue to provide readers with quality, local journalism that matters most to them, and to connect our valued advertising partners with the customers they want to reach.”

The Detroit News has a separate owner.
