CNN has announced a layoff of about 200 people -- 6% of its
workforce -- as it pursues a new digital strategy and subscriber services.
This follows the layoff of 100 people as part of a newsroom reorganization last summer.
The digital
push is being supported by a $70 million investment by CNN parent Warner Bros. Discovery.
“The changes we’re announcing today are part of an ongoing response by this great news
organization to profound and irreversible shifts in the way audiences in America and around the world consume news,” CEO Mark Thompson wrote in a memo to staff, according to CNN.
CNN recently launched a paid subscription service for $3.99 per month.
The new offerings include a lifestyle-oriented digital product.
Thompson added that many new jobs will
open up and that the overall head count won’t fall much by the end of this year.

A new weekday lineup will add Pamela Brown as co-anchor of Wolf Blitzer’s Situation Room as
the program runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A new time slot for Jim Acosta is still being determined.
“Our objective is a simple one: to shift CNN’s gravity towards the
platforms and products where the audience themselves are shifting and, by doing that, to secure CNN’s future as one of the world’s greatest news organizations,” Thompson wrote.
