'Outside Magazine' Owner Acquires Software Firm, Lays Off 20 Team Members

Outside Interactive Inc. -- the parent company of Outside magazine -- has acquired Inntopia, a software provider for the adventure travel and hospitality industry, the firm announced.

In addition, it has laid off 20 members of Outside magazine's editorial and business teams, according to Adventure Journal.

“The acquisition of Inntopia is a major step forward in our mission to get everyone outdoors by inspiring them with our content, activating through our technologies, and ultimately celebrating their adventures on our social platform,” says Robin Thurston, CEO of Outside.

“By combining our content, utilities, and community with Inntopia’s booking platform technology and research, we’re creating a one-stop shop for outdoor adventure travel," Thurston adds.

With regard to the layoff, Outside Interactive issued this statement, according to Adventure Journal: “With the acquisition of Inntopia, we decided to restructure some of our editorial team to allow our outdoor vertical experts to own their categories across the entire platform.”

Categories it will focus on are: snow, cycling, hiking + camping, wellness, mountain bike, triathlon/run, climbing, and food + fitness.

The statement continues: “Last week’s layoffs impacted 20 individuals across the Editorial, Product, Marketing, Sales, and Finance teams, eight of which were local to Colorado.”

The company claims it reaches over 300 million unique users per year, and has more than 100 million registered users. Its brands also include Velo, Yoga Journal, Pinkbike, GaiaGPS, Trailforks and MapMyFitness.
